Release for March.9th, 2009
Brought to you by Radio Lab
Playing to many screaming red and black faithful at the American Airlines Center after the Stars lost to the Montreal Canadians, your Texas Tech Hockey squad was unable to pull off the upset and defend their Big XII Challenge Cup crown vs the Sooners from Oklahoma.
The game would be one of raw emotions as Texas Tech Hockey would dress 5 of their seniors in their final game as Red Raider hockey players.
For the fourth consecutive time the Red Raiders would strike first
against the Sooners taking a 1 goal lead off of a rebound shot that #18
Red Raider Ryan Brown would find the back of the net with. The Sooners
would jump right back in the game with a goal from #27 Kyle Allan.
Oklahoma would take the lead for the first time in the game with a
nifty goal from #15 Owen Brewer. Your Red Raiders would not go into the
first intermission down a goal and would exploded with huge goal by #16
Justin Kuzski with just 1:35 left in the period to tie the game at 2-2
after one.
The second period would start in Texas Techs favor with #16 Justin
Kuzski nabbing his second of the game 5 minutes in and putting your Red
Raiders up 3-2. Penalties would be a killer for Tech as Oklahoma would
score 4 unanswered power-play goals in a span of 7 and a half minutes
putting them up 6-3 going into the second intermission. Goals from the
Sooners came from #9 Justin King, #25 Adrian Borchgrevink, #17 Daryll
Dee and getting his second of the night #27 Kyle Allen.
The third would be all Sooner hockey as the Red Raiders found
themselves in more penalty trouble. #25 Borchgrevink would find the
back of the net once again making the score 7-3 Oklahoma. Tech would
get back into the game on a knuckle ball slap shot from the red line
from #4 Jordan Novak to pull within 3 of the Sooners. That would be all
the scoring the Red Raiders would do though as within a 2 minute span
#21 Kenny Deines and #25 Borchgrevink with his third of the night would
seal the game and Techs chances of fighting back.
But fighting back the Red Raiders did as the end minutes of the game
would have senior Texas Tech goaltender Michael Pruneau rush down and
lay the guns to Oklahoma goalie #31 Colin Sablotny. The two would dance
around throwing punches and pulling on their jerseys until finally the
"French Hammer" laid the smack down on Sablotny. Pruneau would end up
getting the Sooner goalies jersey over his head and begin to send off
the left guns or jabs that would punish Sablotny to the ice. The
goalies would then be broke up and escorted off to their respected
dressing rooms. Pruneau said he was sick of all the taunting; "You know
the game was getting out of hand with all of the penalties being called
against both teams, it was a good game until that happened. It was 9-4
I was frustrated and Sablotny was calling me on from the other end of
the ice, so I obliged him and obliged him well I think. Not exactly how
I predicted my last game as a senior, but it was pretty cool doing it
at the AAC and against our Big XII rival Oklahoma." Quotes senior Texas
Tech goaltender Michael Pruneau. Here is a link to the fight filmed by
a spectator at the game;

#32 Tech goalie Brant Macquoid would come in for the ejected Pruneau
and play the final 8 minutes. The Sooners would score one more goal to
make the final score 10-4 off of a breakaway goal by #15 Owen Brewer,
his second of the evening.Tech would drop its 6th straight game on the
road and finish their tumultuous season 8-21-1, losing 9 of those 21
games by 1 goal. The Big XII Challenge Cup now lays in the hands of the
Sooners and hopefully Texas Tech can win it back next season. The final
shots for the game were 47-20 in favor of the Sooners.
Texas Tech Hockey now will look to a long off-season in hope that they
have a future next year. Support is needed for your Red Raider hockey
team and donations are still being excepted. Game worn and replica
jerseys are still for sale, get your Texas Tech merchandise today!!
